Louis derbré
Louis Derbré (1925 – 2011) is a renowned sculptor of the French and international art scene who continues to astonish and inspire through his iconic work, skillfully combining tradition and innovation. Through his creations, Louis Derbré delves into the depths of history and the human soul, capturing the essence of the era while projecting a decidedly forward-looking perspective. From a young age, Louis Derbré was imbued with the raw beauty of nature and the remnants of history.
This influence is evident in each of his sculptures, where he blends organic elements with a contemporary aesthetic. His distinctive style, characterized by clean lines and expressive forms, bears witness to remarkable technical mastery and deep artistic sensitivity. His career began in 1951 when he received the Fénéon Prize presented by Louis Aragon at the Sorbonne for a portrait of a friend. In 1953, the Paris School of Fine Arts awarded him the national prize. With the 10,000 francs from the Fénéon Prize, Louis Derbré set up his first sculpture studio in the courtyard of the building where he lived in Paris.
In addition to his work as an artist, Louis Derbré also played an active role in art education, sharing his expertise with future generations through workshops, lectures, and collaborations with educational institutions.
Through his unwavering commitment to art and creativity, Louis Derbré continues to leave an indelible mark on the French cultural landscape and beyond. His legacy will endure through his timeless works, which will continue to enrich future generations and inspire wonder.
PATRONS & ENTHUSIASTS
Catherine & François-Noël Desfemmes collectionnent les sculptures de Louis Derbré depuis de nombreuses années. La rencontre entre François-Noël Desfemmes et l’artiste remonte à 1996, dans l’atelier du sculpteur à Ernée en Mayenne. Les deux hommes se lient d’amitié. Si la notoriété « relative » suffisait à l’artiste qui n’appréciait pas les mondanités, Mr Desfemmes n’imagine pas que l’œuvre de Louis Derbré puissent tomber dans l’anonymat. Il évoque donc avec Louis Derbré le projet d’un musée. Aujourd’hui, les visiteurs peuvent admirer une grande partie de l’œuvre de l’artiste avec 150 sculptures dont près de 50 monumentales. Toutes ces œuvres proviennent du fond de dotation Louis Derbré et des collections personnelles de Mr et Mme Desfemmes ainsi que de la fille de l’artiste Mireille Darré-Derbré.
THE MAGIC OF ART TO OUR MIND AND BODY
The effects of Beauty on our brain are increasingly recognised by science. Our emotions, our mood, our ability to concentrate, our memory are stimulated by the beautiful. If art does not cure, it nevertheless has the power to shape our brain. What is happening in our brain when we encounter a work of art? An Artwork shakes quantity of neurotransmitters and painkillers in our brain. A work that you like reduces your body’s stress level, your production of cortisol (the hormone used to wake up in the morning and get into action) slows down, it lowers your heartbeat, the body relaxes, whilst the brain (pleasure and reward) release dopamine (the hormone of the joy of living)

Le musée-promenade Louis Derbré est ouvert tous les jours, du 1er mai au 1er novembre. Les Week-end, jours fériés et vacances scolaires, du 2 novembre au 30 avril. La durée de la visite est d’environ 1h30. La dernière admission se fait 1h30 avant la fermeture.
